Lionfish hunt with Philippe

Finally we are ready for our T&R blog. And because Curacao’s underwater world is indescribably beautiful, it will be easy to provide you with news, stories and pictures from here. But let’s go back in time to look what happened in front of our camera lens. Yes, Jacque Cousteau’s grandson, Philippe Cousteau, Jr. was here in Curacao. And we had the honor to film for his TV show Xploration Awesome Planet. So let’s go diving:)

Turtle & Ray

What a friendly guy Philippe is, I can tell you this. However, after he and his team provided me and the team of Ocean Encounters Diving with instructions, it was time to go on board. One of our main goals was to find and film Lionfish. Jeremiah our boat captain and Pol, our Lionfish expert and experient Lionfish hunter was part of the adventure. Fortunately the famous invader from the Indian Ocean is easy to spot, so Philippe, Pol and me decent down into the amazing underwater world of Curacao. And there it was, beside beautiful corals, colorful sponges and schools of fish, the Lionfish. It almost looked like it was waiting for us. It seemed like it was saying “film me, film me”.

Lionfish

So I turned on the camera and my underwater light, checked once more settings and angle of approach… But huh, what happened? Pol was already closer and within a second his spear soared though the water right into the beautiful creature. It twitched once or twice before it was motionless dead. Yes, we hunt Lionfish on Curacao. Maybe you think this is ruthless or cruel, but it is necessary to minimize population, since it is an invader to the Caribbean and have no natural predator.

Hunting Lionfish

So Pol stored the dead fish in his Zookeeper and we continued our dive. Just a few fin-kicks further we spotted already the next Lionfish. This time I had the first shoot. It is easy to film Lionfish. They move very little. So I had enough time to film it from all angles and make some nice close ups. Also Philippe was amazed by the beauty of this fish. Than also this one had to die and we returned to our boat. Everyone was happy! Here is the link to the full story;

Cover shoot!

Every photography’s company dream is it to provide the cover shoot for a magazine or book. For us this dream came true in the end of 2015. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was driving in my car and my cellphone rang: “Hello, this is Sheila from Events Curacao, I strongly believe you should have an advertisement in our magazine”. Suspiciously and a little distracted I answered “mmm ah, and why you think this”… Luckily, Sheila is a very good seller and she did not give up. This was actually in 2014 and we ended up having our advertisement in the 2015 edition and also more of our photos published.

Advertising diving

Than in the end of 2015 Sheila contacted us again. This time for the cover shoot of the 2016 edition. She had a vision, and she thought we could realize it. So in our first meeting she started to talk about dolphins under a dive boat with a girl in bikini with snorkel gear. A split-shoot, with the SeaAquarium in the background. Hornestly, I thought she is crazy. But OK, my answer was “yeah we can do this… Sure”. So the day arrived, our cameras ready, dive boat ready, girl in bikini and snorkel gear ready. Just no Dolphins. But our plan was to produce two pictures: one splitt-shoot with the boat and girl and another one with dolphins. Than photoshop can fix it.

The day was calm and good for what was our plan. And actually we managed to get the photo done in less than two hours. After on the computer we were very happy about the results. And more important Sheila was as well! Our first cover shoot was done:)
